HER x EEEF x Ma On Shan Community Center provided a small home appliance support event for community on 2 July 2025
【 NGO Background】
This is a community center in Ma On Shan run by the Hong Kong Baptist Church, dedicated to serving the elderly. The center provides elderly residents with social, recreational, educational, and health services, promoting their well-being, social inclusion, and lifelong learning. EEEF is an organization or fund that supports environmental education, resource sharing, and sustainability initiatives, often by granting support to community projects and coordinating partnerships among schools, NGOs, and local groups. HER is a local nonprofit focusing on reducing waste through the repair and upcycling of household electronics. They run workshops, train volunteers, and provide repair services to benefit the public, especially the elderly and low-income families.
The three partners can organize a “Green Appliance Repair Day” where elderly residents bring their small appliances for free diagnosis and repair. HER’s technicians train both seniors and young volunteers on-site, while EEEF supports the event logistics and promotion. The centre provides the space and helps mobilize participants. Beyond fixing appliances, the event fosters lifelong learning, community cohesion, and environmental stewardship.
By collaborating, these organizations can create far-reaching benefits for the elderly and the wider community. The Ma On Shan Elderly Centre can identify seniors in need and provide a welcoming venue for programs. EEEF can offer funding, promotion, and guidance, connecting stakeholders and leveraging resources. HER brings expertise in electronics repair and environmental education, training elderly participants and volunteers to extend the life of appliances. Through joint workshops and events:
1. Elderly residents gain practical skills, social connection, and affordable repair services, improving their quality of life.
2. The community learns about waste reduction and sustainable living.
3. Resources are shared efficiently, and the impact of each partner’s mission is amplified through collaboration.
4. Intergenerational engagement and volunteerism are promoted, fostering a stronger, greener, and more caring community.
🌟【Event Highlights】🌟
On July 2 and July 9, a series of community activities was held at a local center involving household appliance recycling and repair workshops. Residents were invited to bring used or second-hand electronic appliances for donation and recycling, while workshop participants learned practical skills to inspect and repair small appliances. These hands-on experiences not only supported environmental protection by reducing waste but also empowered community members with green skills and promoted social inclusion.
Over two event days, numerous used appliances (e.g., fans, rice cookers, kettles, blenders) were successfully collected and given a second life. Dozens of residents participated and received hands-on repair training. Appliances were either repaired on-site or prepared for safe recycling. Enhanced community awareness of electronic waste reduction and responsible consumption. Strengthened intergenerational community bonds by bringing together the elderly, youth, and families in learning and service.
